History

Established in 1862 as a teacher training college for the Diocese of Lincoln, it only gained full degree awarding powers in 2006.[2] It attracts mature and local students, with 27% of the undergraduate body aged 21 or above at the start of their course, and 50% from a 30 mile radius.[2] The courses often include a vocational element and many, but not all, engage with teaching and education subjects – of four foundation and nine honours degrees, eight include education-related studies or teaching.[3]

Before 2006, the University of Hull and later the University of Leicester validated its qualifications. It was originally known as the 'Diocesan Training School for Mistresses', then 'Lincoln Diocesan Training College' and then 'Bishop Grosseteste College' before adopting its current name in 2006. The college initially occupied the premises of an earlier, unsuccessful training establishment for male teachers, built in 1842 and still in use.

The college takes its present name from Robert Grosseteste, a 13th century Bishop of Lincoln, theologian and scholar.

In 2008 Dame Judith Mayhew was made Provost of Bishop Grosseteste University College.

Teaching and courses

Bishop Grosseteste offers Foundation and Honours degrees and Education and Subject courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Courses on offer include: Undergraduate Level Foundation degrees

Honours degrees

Postgraduate Level

Professional Development

Many students combine education studies with something else, allowing them to gain degree level knowledge of a subject. Teaching is through lectures, seminars, workshops, practicals and work-related placements.[2]

Social life

Bishop Grosseteste has few university-organised entertainments, perhaps due to the high numbers of mature and local students who go there. However the Students' Union offer a variety of clubs and societies, these include:

Sports

The BG Football Society is to enter into the BUCS football competition for the first time in 2009/10. The new sports centre is free but fairly basic: a couple of acres with football pitch, hockey pitch, tennis and netball courts and a gym.[2]

Accommodation

With more than 2,000 full-time students and only 180 places in halls,[2] getting a place in halls can be a struggle. Having said that, with such a large number of mature and local students, few first years actually need or want to live in. No second or third years live in halls [2] The three halls are within a few minutes’ walk of each other and the campus. Private accommodation is relatively easy to find within walking distance of campus and other student essentials – especially in the Newport area. In university there’s a full-time accommodation officer who provides a list of vacancies and approved landlords. Bishop Grosseteste also runs an open evening to introduce students and landlords – and the officers on hand to advise on tenant troubles.

There are currently preliminary plans to either expand/revamp the current accommodation or build new ones in the future although nothing is as of yet definite.

An extension to the Sibthorpe Library (Bishop Grosseteste on campus Library) is currently under way doubling study space and incorporating Student Support services.

Students' Union

The college has a very active Students' Union, with two sabbatical officers, a development manager and a part-time executive of 18 students, they provide a variety of entertainment and activities throughout the year.

The Welfare team provide students with a strong student based support network and along with their confidential listening service, aim to support students throughout their studies at Bishop Grosseteste. The Welfare team provide a number of awareness campaigns during the year, promoting various sexual health issues and other contemporary issues prominent in today's society.

The entertainments team provide students with regular entertainment, ranging from live music, live comedy, themed pub crawls and their annual music festival.

The union has a well established RAG team who have been raising money for charities for over 35 years, Bishop Grosseteste Students' Union RAG Teams raise on average £10,000 a year for their four chosen charities, which considering Bishop Grosseteste's student numbers, is very impressive. The BG Football Society are also involved in charity events - raising over £1000 for charities in 2008/9.

The current Students' Union president is Stephen Illidge, who took over from Sam Thompson who was incumbent from 2010-11.
